While driving in our SUV one afternoon, Shay asked... "Mom, are girls allowed to drive trucks?" At first, I didn't really understand the question, because I thought it was a pretty obvious... "Yes, girls can drive trucks." I could see from my rear view mirror, the realization come to her as she turned around to stare at the women driving the huge diesel pickup truck behind us. "Oh, I didn't know that!", she said. I was surprised that wasn't common knowledge to 8 year old girls. "Did you know, I've driven a truck before?", I asked her, hoping for the reaction that I got. "Wow, really? That is so cool!" was her response. I couldn't believe, how with that one sweet comment, I felt pretty cool!
The rest of the day, driving around town and even on the freeway, she kept an eye out for "girls" driving pickup trucks and would proudly point them out. Now is the time to teach my smart daughter, that women are strong and independent, and can do ANYTHING that a boy can do (well except peeing while standing... that one is a little tricky) if they set their mind to it!! It makes me want her first vehicle be a big'o pickup truck (with a big stick, in the bed, to beat off all the boys)!!!
