Reflections

9.26.10
Like a lot of school across the nation, Shay's school is participating in the PTA's Reflection Program which is an elective contest that students can submit entries to their local PTA. There are six art areas to choose from... dance, film, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts and goes from K to 12th grade. This theme for this year's contest is "Together we can...". We asked Shay what she thought of when told the theme. She said "Together we can clean the earth because we love it". Then we asked her what came to her mind when she thought of about her own theme and her idea was an Earth with kids cleaning it. Julio and I helped her with some ideas of what she could do and she decided to make an Earth with kids on it. So here is the process that Shay did for her Reflections entry...

She started with a Styrofoam ball
Daddy showed her how to paper-mache
Dad was a good helper
Shay got the hang of it real quick!
All finished! Now to let it dry.
Daddy & Shay being silly pretending
to lick it...
Ta-dah!
While Shay worked on her project,
Kayde pretended to fix his tricycle...

Over the next couple of days, Shay painted the Earth and had to draw 30 little kids and glue them on toothpicks and poke them into the globe.
She also wrote her theme
"Together we can clean the Earth..."
...Because we love it"

10.12.10
Then came the big day... the Reflections Art Gallery, where they put up all the kids entries all over Shay's school so the families and fellow students could see what everyone else had made. Soon we found Shay's project (which was classified as Visual 3D Art) in the library. When we saw that she had a BIG ribbon, we all got super excited! A BIG ribbon meant that she had won in her division and that her project gets to go to Regional's!
Later we found out that Shay was the only
Kindergartner to make it to Regional! WOW!!
Here is Shay getting a treat for
entering her project into the program!

We couldn't be more proud of Shay and how hard she worked on her project. She did a fantastic job and we are happy that she took the time to enter even though she didn't have to. We sure LOVE our budding little artist!
Now we just have to patiently wait
to find out about regional's...
We'll keep you updated!
